Of the Terms
Effective October 12, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Dylan Allman, Austin, Texas (“we”, “us”), the publisher of The Black Breviary (the “app”, which includes the website at blackbreviary.app). By signing the pact you accept them. Our Privacy Policy explains what we hold about you and forms part of these terms.
Age
You must be 18 or over to sign the pact and use the app. By signing you confirm that you are. If you are younger, do not sign. We withdraw any account we learn belongs to someone under 18.
What the app is
The Black Breviary is a daily devotional written from the position of atheistic Satanism, which takes the self as its own authority and requires no supernatural belief. Each day it offers a reading, a charge, a rite and a question, and it keeps a private journal (the Testament) and a public register of those who have signed (the Record).
The pact is symbolic. Its language of souls, renunciation and keeping is a literary and personal act, and its effect, legal or religious, reaches only as far as what it means to you. It creates no obligation between you and us or anyone else. Your relationship with us is governed by these terms alone.
The app is independent of every church, temple and religious organization, Satanic or otherwise.
The app offers reflection and provides no therapy, medical care or crisis service. If you are in danger, call your local emergency number.
The rites
Every rite is an invitation, and you decide whether to perform it, and how.
- Perform rites in private, on things you own, and within the law where you are.
- Do not perform a rite in a place of worship, on another person’s property, on any object that belongs to someone else, or in the presence of anyone who has not freely chosen to be there.
- Some rites involve alcohol. Use the Sober setting if you do not drink, and never drink where it would put you or anyone else at risk.
- Any rite can be refused in your own words or set aside by keeping the day’s charge alone. Neither costs you anything.
- In some countries, acts and words against religion are crimes. You are responsible for knowing the law where you live and for what you choose to do.
You perform rites at your own choice and risk. We are not responsible for the consequences of acts you choose to perform.
Your account
Your account is your soul number. You sign in with a passkey stored on your device, or with your soul number and your seal. Keep your seal private and keep a copy somewhere safe. We cannot recover a lost seal, reset it, or open your Testament without it. Anyone who has your seal and soul number can sign in as you. Tell us at blackbreviary@pm.me if you believe your account has been taken.
You may hold one account. Signing again on the anniversary renews the same account.
Your content
What you write in your Testament belongs to you. It is encrypted on your device and we cannot read it. You give us permission to store and transmit it in encrypted form so the app can keep it and sync it.
What you choose to publish, meaning your display name, signature, profile line, city, faith left behind and the like, you allow us to display in the Record and on your public profile for as long as you keep it public. You can make it private or delete it at any time. Chosen names, profile lines and cities pass a word filter when you save them, and text that fails it is refused. You are responsible for what you publish and confirm you have the right to publish it.
Acceptable use
The app spends its contempt on gods, scriptures, clergy and doctrines and spares people, and the same rule binds you wherever your words appear in the app. In your name, profile line and anything else others can see, you may not:
- express hatred of, or call for violence or discrimination against, any person or group because of their religion, race, ethnicity, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or any similar characteristic;
- threaten, harass or intimidate anyone, or call for any act against a believer, a member of the clergy or a place of worship;
- publish another person’s name, photograph, address or other identifying details, or impersonate anyone;
- publish sexual content, slurs, or content that is illegal where you are or where we operate;
- use the app if you are under 18, or sign on behalf of someone else.
You may not attack, overload or probe the service, scrape or bulk-copy the Record or public profiles, create accounts by automated means, or try to read data that is yours by no right.
We may remove or hide anything published in breach of these rules, make a Record row anonymous, turn off a public profile, or suspend or withdraw an account. Where we can, we will tell you why.
Reporting. Every row in the Record and every public profile has a Report control, and Hide this soul removes any soul from your own view of the Record. You can also write to blackbreviary@pm.me, the address shown in the app under Self. We review reports within 24 hours and act on those that breach these terms.
Our content
The readings, charges, rites, questions and the design of the app are © 2026 Dylan Allman. The engravings are in the public domain; our processing of them, and their selection and arrangement, are ours. We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use the app and its content for your own devotion, including the Book of each year that the app makes for you. You may quote the app in reasonable portions with credit. Do not republish its content in bulk or build another product from it.
Price
The app is free and takes no payments. If paid features are ever added, we will tell you in advance, and purchases will be governed by the terms of the store you buy through and any additional terms we publish at that time.
Withdrawal and termination
You may withdraw at any time from Self, which deletes your account as described in the Privacy Policy. We may suspend or withdraw your account if you break these terms, if the law requires it, or if we stop operating the app. If we stop operating it, we will give at least 30 days’ notice in the app so you can download your Testament.
Changes to the app and these terms
The app will change. We may add, alter or remove features and content. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will announce it in the app at least 14 days before the change takes effect. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept the new terms; if you do not accept them, withdraw.
Disclaimers
The app is provided as it is and as available. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and uninterrupted or error-free operation. We do not promise the app will meet your needs or that any devotion, rite or reading will have any effect on you.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of data (including a Testament that cannot be opened because a seal was lost), arising from your use of the app or from rites you choose to perform. Our total liability for any claim relating to the app is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or US$50. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limits, and in those places they apply only as far as the law permits.
Indemnity
You agree to compensate us for claims, losses and reasonable legal costs that arise from content you publish in the app or from your breach of these terms.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be heard in the courts of Travis County, Texas, except that you may bring a claim in the courts where you live if the law of your country gives you that right. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.
App stores
If you downloaded the app from the Apple App Store, you and we acknowledge that these terms are between you and us only, and that Apple is not a party to them and is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the app. Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims by you or any third party relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and consumer protection or privacy claims. Apple is not responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement or discharge of any claim that the app infringes a third party’s intellectual property rights. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a terrorist-supporting country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. Questions and complaints about the app go to us at blackbreviary@pm.me.
If you downloaded the app from Google Play, Google Play’s terms of service also apply to your use of the store.
General
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in force. If we do not enforce a term, we have not waived it. You may not transfer your account or these terms; we may transfer them to a successor who takes over the app. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the app.
